Campus Students Taking Online Courses (2024)

General Instructions

Florida Tech Online courses are available to Melbourne campus undergraduate students. Interested? Here’s how:

  1. Check our2 YR Course Projection 08.01.24before you meet with your advisor.
  2. After the schedule is posted on PAWS (see dates below) obtain your advisor’s signature on the Main Campus Request to Register for Online Course.
  3. Submit the form to the registration center.

Summer 2 2024: July 1 - August 25

Registration from April 18 - June 26

Fall 1 2024: August 26 - October 20

Registration from June 20 - August 21

Fall 2 2024: October 21 - December 15

Registration from June 20 - October 16

Spring 1 2025: January 13 - March 9

Registration from November 4 - January 8

Spring 2 2025: March 17 - May 11

Registration from November 4 - March 12

Summer 2025: May 19 - July 13

Registration from February 3 - May 14

Undergraduate Student Guidelines

  • There is no limit on the overall number of online courses a campus student may complete while attending Florida Tech.
  • Students are eligible to take courses during the summer term based on advisor approval. No additional approvals are required. Students pay the current online tuition rate for summer courses only.
  • Online courses are included in the credit-hour limit for summer registration, probationary and conditionally readmitted students.
  • Fall and spring registration requires approval from the student's advisor and the dean’s designee on the appropriate form.
  • Fall and spring courseshave flat-rate tuition.
  • International students on a visa are restricted to only one online class per semester as part of their full load course requirement.
  • Sponsored students are required to provide financial approval specifically for an online course.
  • The following justifications should be approved by the academic unit when considering online course requests for fall and spring semesters:
    • The course is required for graduation within the current academic year
    • Courses are not available on campus and are determined to be academically appropriate by the advisor
    • An internship or co-op requires the student to be off campus
    • Medical needs require the completion of online course(s)
    • ROTC students that need to stay on a 4-year track
    • Additional justifications may be considered only in extreme situations when no other solution can be found by the advisor and/or dean's designee, and the student will be greatly harmed

Graduate Student Guidelines

  • There is no limit on the overall number of online courses a campus student may complete while attending Florida Tech.
  • Students pay the current tuition rate based on the program of study/major.
  • International students on a visa are restricted to only one online class per semester as part of their full-load course requirement.
  • Graduate students require individual approval by the academic unit.
  • Students in international business or healthcare management MBA programs are pre-approved for online courses.

Important Questions and Answers about Taking Online8-Week Courses

What classes will be offered?
You can see our typical course offerings by viewing our2 YR Course Projection 08.01.24.

Are online classes easier than face-to-face classes?
No. The learning objectives are the same as on-campus counterparts. The online format is challenging for some students. Discuss with your advisor whether online learning is right for you.

Who is my professor going to be?
For the online programs, you’ll register for the class, not the section. Students can locate instructor information in the course site on theFriday evening before the first day of class, when they gain access to the course.

Can I change sections?
No, sections are assigned by an automated administrative process; there is no drop/add process for online.

When do I get access to class?
You will have access only to the syllabus until classes officially begin. Then on Monday at 12:01a.m., you will gain access to the full class site.

Where do I log in for class?
You will access your online course through your Canvas account.

Where do I get my books?
Once you have registered, you will receive an email sent to your my.fit.edu email address with instructions on how to purchase your books. Books for online coursesare not stocked by the Florida Tech campus bookstore.

Are there required meeting times?
Florida Tech Online classes are 100% online. There are no required meeting times, although there are assignment deadlines students must meet each week. Students may also have scheduled meetings with the professor and group projects for which they’ll need to schedule study sessions.

Can I take this class from anywhere?
You need a reliable high-speed internet connection to participate in class. You will also need access to a computer, as a mobile device is not sufficient for the full class experience.

Are there on-campus meeting requirements?
No, all Florida Tech Online classes are 100% online.

Can international students take online classes?
In some cases, yes. Please check with theISSS office.

Is there a limit to how many courses I can take online?
No, although students attending on visas are restricted to one online class per semester.

How will the course be displayed on my transcript?
Your course will be listed in the same manner as your on-campus courses. The transcript will not indicate that the course was taken online, except through an internal code used by Florida Tech staff.

When will I receive my grade?
Grades will be available in PAWS the Wednesday after class ends.
